I just finished reading The Crown of Mexico: Maximilian and His Empress Carlota by Joan Haslip (New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1971; ISBN: 0-03-086572). I will admit to being somewhat of a monarchist, mostly because of the genealogies and enjoy reading royal biographies and histories. I knew a bit about the ill-fated history of the Empire of Mexico but did not know much of the details. This book was a fairly light read but well documented. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
